Pear Tree House has been an Edinburgh institution since it opened as a bar in 1982. Situated close to Edinburgh University, it attracts a mixture of students and local customers, which creates a laid back, cosmopolitan atmosphere. The history of the eighteenth century building is evident in the prints on the walls, the collection of historical Scottish literature, and the plaque on the front of the building reading "1749"! The tradition of great food and drink goes back just as far as that as well. Originally a residential house, the wealthy citizens of Edinburgh were entertained here by a succession of local figures. This tradition is carried on today, albeit with the benefits of a specially designed bar. Draught and bottled beers, a wide range of spirits, liquers and single malt whiskys, cocktails, wine, filled rolls, coffees... Just pop in and see for yourself.
